How Do I Get There? Fly in to Auckland and catch a connecting domestic flight to KeriKeri airport, where we can arrange your local 40 min. transport to Opua with the friendly Joe Dirkson, of KeriKeri Taxi Shuttle & Tours. Once at Opua Wharf our local guide will provide a river cruise with some local history on the way to Mangrove Lodge. Or hire a car from Auckland airport and enjoy a scenic 3 1/2 hour drive up the East Coast. Simply, a magnificent way to go. Apart from the amazing countryside you will also have the convenience of self-drive transport to visit the many sight-seeing and historic site must-do's while in the Opua, Russell, Paihia and Waitangi regions. Make sure to check out Flagstaff Lookout at Russell, 360 degree views of the local area! If not at Mangrove Lodge, we can suggest a stay at Russell or Tapeka Point, a short car ferry trip from Opua and 5-10 minute drive from Okiato Point, the ferry drop off point. Either way, settle in on your first day before preparing for your evening Maori Challenge! A traditional welcome greeting you will never forget. A relaxing river cruise back to Opua and car transfer through Paihia to the Waitangi Treaty House, or a ferry transfer from Russell and car transfer from Paihia. The beautiful Waitangi National Reserve is where New Zealand's most significant document was signed, The Waitangi Treaty. In 1840 the British Government and Maori Chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi and New Zealand became part of the British Empire.
Recoup at Paihia on the way home or ease into the warmth of your remote lodge. Enjoy the evening stars, the moon reflecting on the water, relax on the large deck in surrounds that will take you away from it all... until you awake again to enjoy another experience tomorrow.
