| Eden, Sapphire Coast |
Untouched, unspoiled, Australian natural beauty. Impeccable, clean and perfect. Our Sapphire Coast NSW. Rich in fishing and whaling history, still a fishing town today, with whale-watching grounds in season (twice yearly migration), simply the best in Australia. Waterways, mountain ranges and forests in abundance. Although abandoned now, whaling was established by Ben Boyd in 1842 and Boydtown was founded in 1843 by the same man, also home to Ben Boyd National Park. This park is in two sections, North and South of Eden. Corporate & Community Tip - Create some history for tomorrow. Ask us how you can help to develop an important icon, Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre!
Where Can I Stay? Eden and nearby Merimbula has any number of affordable apartments, motels, motor inns and B&B's to choose from, or Shadrack Caravan Park with complimentary lobster and abalone diving at your doorstep. Either way, striking water or coastal views are achievable here, at a fantastic price. How Do I Get There? Approximately 6.5 hours drive south of Sydney on the Princes Highway, Eden is known as the halfway point between Melbourne and Sydney. Eden is situated on the deep harbour of the picturesque, Twofold Bay which was named by George Bass in 1798. Only 55 Km's from the New South Wales & Victorian border. We recommend a Hertz hire car to enjoy and fully appreciate our majestic coastline, in what is one of NSW great coastal drives. You can also take a 70 or 90 minute flight from Sydney to Merimbula, or a 70 minute flight from Melbourne to Merimbula. If flying we recommend Rex, Regional Express airlines :
What Is There To Do? Eden has an absolutely fascinating Killer Whale Museum where you can learn about the abandoned whale industry of yesteryear. You can see a skeleton of a killer whale, snail fossils and whaling relics. Make time for this! Local beaches include Aslings Beach, the main surfing beach with a rock pool at the southern end and Cocora Beach equipped with a barbeque area and toilets. For some other interesting local industry knowledge, visit Duncan's Sawmill on the weekend. Eden has all-weather ports and accessibility to the sea without bar crossings. There are nearby coves and bays to the south that will protect you against any wind direction, making for some of the best boating and fishing available on the NSW coastline. Fishing Tip - Try your hand at some Twofold Bay Snapper, usually only 300 metres from the Local Post Office under the Church grounds. Fresh local bait for best results, for live bait, head to the Navy Wharf aka General Purpose Wharf, Twofold Bay, Eden. 4WD enthusiasts will be in heaven on this part of the coast, with numerous trails open to the public. Nudgee Nature Reserve is located south of Wonboyn Lake, a totally productive, healthy, prestine coastline and marine environment with diverse flora. Recreational use is limited so best to check access times with the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) at Merimbula. The underwater marine world is plentiful on the Sapphire Coast and provides some great local dive opportunities. Seek local advice and you will find the ocean floor habitat and marine life is spectacular (don't forget your underwater camera for some amazing memories). Dining and entertainment at the Eden Fishermen's Recreation Club is highly recommended. You can be assured that this club always has its community interests at heart, continuously running local events for the benefit and sponsorship of others.
